What Do the Charger Indicator Light Colours Mean?

Last updated Aug 14, 2026

The external indicator light gives you a quick view of the charger’s current status. Always check both the colour and the light pattern, such as solid, flashing, fast flashing or breathing.

The external indicator light is different from an icon or error code shown inside the charger screen. If the light indicates an error, check the screen and record the complete error code before taking further action.

Indicator colours can vary between charger types and product versions. First identify your charger and use only the section that matches its front-panel design.

First, identify the indicator

Depending on the product, the external indicator may appear as:

  • a light strip on the Portable AC Charger control box;
  • a front-panel status light beside or near the Wallbox display and controls;
  • separate illuminated controls for the left and right outputs on a Dual Wallbox; or
  • an RGB status indicator on the front of a DC Wallbox.

Do not confuse these external lights with:

  • vehicle, Wi-Fi, RFID, phase or ground icons inside the screen;
  • a warning symbol and numbered error code on the screen; or
  • lights on the vehicle or charging connector that are controlled by the vehicle.

Portable AC Charger indicator light

On the compatible 11 kW Portable EV Charger, the external indicator is the narrow light strip on the front of the inline control box, below the screen and control buttons.

AC Wallbox indicator light

On the compatible 11 kW Wallbox with Cable, the external status light is located on the front control area near the display.

Dual Wallbox indicator lights

The Dual Wallbox has separate left and right output controls on the front panel. Identify which output is connected to the vehicle before interpreting its status.

DC Wallbox indicator light

The 20/30/40 kW DC Wallbox has an RGB status indicator on the front of the charger. The touchscreen provides more detailed charging and fault information.

Colour and pattern must be read together

The same colour can have different meanings depending on whether it is solid, flashing, slowly flashing, fast flashing or breathing.

  • Solid: the light remains continuously illuminated.
  • Flashing: the light repeatedly turns on and off.
  • Slow flashing: a slower on-and-off pattern, used for an active schedule on the Dual Wallbox.
  • Fast flashing: a rapid on-and-off pattern, used for a firmware update on the Dual Wallbox.
  • Breathing: the light gradually brightens and dims, used for active charging on the DC Wallbox.
  • Counted red flashes: a repeating number of flashes that identifies a Dual Wallbox error code.

If the indicator does not match this guide

Stop and check the charger model rather than using the closest-looking colour description. Prepare:

  • a short video showing the complete light pattern;
  • a photo of the charger screen;
  • a photo of the product label;
  • the model and rated power;
  • whether a vehicle was connected;
  • whether charging had started; and
  • your order number and purchase country, if available.

Send the information to support@depow.com. A short video is especially helpful when the difference between solid, flashing, slow flashing and breathing is unclear.
