An IP55 rating means that the rated enclosure is protected against a limited amount of dust and low-pressure water jets from different directions. It can withstand rain and water splashes under the specified test conditions, but it is not rated for high-pressure water jets or immersion. This explanation applies only to a product or component specifically marked IP55.
What the two digits in IP55 mean
IP stands for Ingress Protection. The first digit describes protection against solid particles such as dust. The second digit describes protection against water.

What water exposure does IP55 cover?
An IP55-rated enclosure can withstand exposure such as rain, water splashes and low-pressure water jets under the specified test conditions.
The rating applies only to the component marked IP55. Do not assume that every part of a charger has the same IP rating.
What are the limits of IP55?
- Do not expose an IP55-rated component to a high-pressure water jet.
- Do not place it in standing water.
- Do not submerge it in water.
- Do not describe IP55 as completely waterproof or completely dustproof.
