A portable charger with an IP66-rated control box can be used in exposed outdoor locations, including home driveways, open-air parking areas and temporary outdoor sites. The control box can withstand dust and rain exposure, but it must not be placed in standing water or submerged. The Type 2 plug coupling has a separate IP55 rating and should not be cleaned with a high-pressure water jet.
Why the control box can be used outdoors
IP means Ingress Protection. The two digits describe the enclosure's protection against dust and water.

IP66 describes the protection of the control box enclosure. It does not mean that the complete charger or every connector has the same rating. For a fuller explanation, see what an IP66 rating means.
Suitable locations
An IP66-rated portable charger control box can be used in locations such as:
- an exposed home parking space;
- an outdoor driveway;
- an open-air public parking area;
- a construction site; or
- a temporary outdoor work area.
The IP66 rating provides protection against dust and rain exposure in these environments. Check that your charger's control box is marked IP66 before applying this guidance.
Where the charger should not be used
- Do not place the control box in standing water or a puddle.
- Do not submerge the control box or any other part of the charger.
- Do not assume that the Type 2 plug coupling has the same IP66 rating as the control box.
- Do not use a high-pressure water jet to clean the Type 2 plug coupling.
Important: The Type 2 plug coupling is rated IP55. It can withstand rain and water splashes, but it should not be exposed to high-pressure water jets.
Check the rating before use
Look for the IP rating shown on the product or in its manual. If the rating is unclear, check the relevant portable AC charger user manual before using the charger outdoors.
