Why Do Portable Chargers Use PC Housing?

Last updated Sep 24, 2026

Polycarbonate, usually shortened to PC, is used for portable charger housings because it combines impact resistance, heat resistance, flame-retardant properties, electrical insulation and weather resistance. These properties help the housing protect the internal components during handling and outdoor use.

What is PC?

PC stands for polycarbonate. It is a strong thermoplastic material that can be moulded into the control box housing and its sealing structures.

Why is PC used for the housing?

Resistance to impact

A portable charger may be moved, carried or accidentally knocked during normal use. PC has high mechanical strength and impact resistance, which helps the housing resist cracking and protect the components inside.

Heat resistance and flame retardance

The housing may be exposed to heat while the charger is operating. PC provides heat resistance and flame-retardant properties, helping the enclosure maintain its protective function.

Resistance to outdoor exposure

PC offers weather and ultraviolet resistance. This helps reduce material ageing, yellowing and brittleness caused by outdoor exposure.

Electrical insulation

PC is an electrically insulating material. The non-conductive housing provides a protective barrier around the internal electrical components.

Support for a sealed enclosure

PC can be injection-moulded into detailed housing shapes, including the structures needed for enclosure seals. This supports the dust and water protection design of the complete control box.

Note: The housing material alone does not determine the IP rating. The rating applies to the complete enclosure, including its design, seals and assembly.

How does the housing relate to IP66?

The portable charger control box has an IP66 rating. This rating describes the completed enclosure's tested protection against dust and water, rather than the PC material by itself.
